Item #: SCP-XXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXX is to be kept in a 3x3m cell of standard reinforcement. Standard floodlights are to be kept in the cell and oriented so that one corner of the room remains in darkness. No fewer than two (2) guards are to be posted outside of the cell at any given time. Human interaction with SCP-XXX is forbidden except for authorized experimentation, and any personnel who may be exposed to SCP-XXX (including D-class personnel) must first undergo a psychological examination in order to identify any particularly traumatic memories.
Description: When in what is believed to be its natural state, SCP-XXX appears to be a shifting area of shadow. This shadow has no apparent source, and must remain within an area of darkness. Should SCP-XXX encounter a fully-lit area with no naturally occurring shadows, it will manifest in the closest lightless area. When within 15m of a human observer, SCP-XXX enters its active phase, which proceeds as follows:
Stage 1: SCP-XXX takes the appearance of a person of great emotional significance from the observer's history. In 98% of observed cases the form taken is of someone who had caused intense emotional damage to the subject in some way, and in 40% of cases the person being copied is deceased. Upon assuming this form, SCP-XXX exits the shadowed area and calls out to the subject. It adopts mannerisms and behaviors identical to the form being copied, so long as they serve to endear it to the subject. SCP-XXX also appears to induce a slightly psychic effect on the subject, increasing the intensity of the bond between it and the subject and suppressing any disbelief the subject may have regarding SCP-XXX's form. 85% of subjects are able to be removed from the proximity of SCP-XXX at or before this point with no lasting psychological damage, given adequate therapy. When the subject believes completely in the identity of SCP-XXX, stage 2 begins.
