SCP-XXX: The Town that Never Was
rating: 0+x

Item #: SCP-XXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: Due to the anomalous nature of the object, there is currently no way to contain it. Aerial photography is often sufficient to locate each appearance of SCP-XXX, and when such an instance occurs, any entrances to the object are to be secured. Foundation personnel may be deployed in order to document the growth of the object, if any. At the first sign of SCP-XXX's collapse, all agents are to evacuate the object immediately. No more than 3 foundation personnel are permitted to be inside the object at one time. Growth of the object is to be immediately documented in attached Addendum SCP-XXX-A.

Description: SCP-XXX is a town located in the Midwest region of the United States. The exact location of SCP-XXX varies, including disappearing completely on multiple occasions. Instances of SCP-XXX have never been discovered south of 37° N latitude, west of 102° W Longitude, east of 80° W Longitude, or further north than the northern border of the United States.

The exact size and layout of SCP-XXX varies widely depending on the location and terrain in which the SCP manifests. Street signs and local maps indicate the town is called "Sweet Water", and no matter the town's location, municipal buildings and homes fly a Missouri state flag. While the layout changes, many important buildings remain in similar proximity.

Each building is given a separate numerical designation (e.g., SCP-XXX-1) and all objects within are considered part of that particular object. Town residents are given alphabetic designations (e.g., SCP-XXX-A). A full list of all buildings and residents is available upon request from Dr. ██████.

Instances of SCP-XXX exist only temporarily, usually between 10 and 90 days, before the town enters a collapsing state. Sweet Water experiences a severe tremor that shatters most windows within a kilometer of the center of the town. Less than 20 minutes later, the town's buildings begin to collapse of their own accord, presumably killing all occupants, and within the hour the entire town is reduced to rubble which then begins to disintegrate. The entire process is over within two hours total. Any non-residents in the town at the time of its disappearance become residents in future instances of SCP-XXX. Because of the unpredictable nature of the object, the process by which the town comes into existence is currently unknown.

Residents of the town appear to be unaware of the town's collapse, and will insist that the town has always been located where it currently is located; specifically, Sweet Water, Missouri. Residents will, however, remember visitors who have previously been to the town, and suffer only amnesia about the events of the town after it has entered the collapsing state. Residents appear completely unaware of the town's anomalous effects.

Historical Research: Accounts of the town's appearance date back to as early as 1952, when an insurance salesman named ██████ ██████ came through the town to refuel his vehicle and have lunch, exiting the town shortly thereafter. Upon his return, the town had disappeared, and Mr. ██████ wrote a letter to a local newspaper asking for directions to the town.

The first reference to Sweet Water, Missouri is on an investment proposal by a man named Walter █████████, who wanted to build a planned town as a suburb of St. Louis, in nearby St. Louis County. The proposal, despite being well-received, was ultimately abandoned after the death of Mr. █████████ in 1949.
