The Hero

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX-1, SCP-XXXX-4, and all instances of SCP-XXXX-3 will at all times be kept in SCP-XXXX-2, and SCP-XXXX-2 must be confined in a 20 meter by 20 meter stainless steel vault with multi-level digital lock at least two meters above the floor. Both SCP-XXXX must be kept under spectral and thermal imaging observation, a terminal with a direct link to the SCP Mainframe and major news sources must be active at all times. Activity within SCP-XXXX-2 must be analyzed in relation to current events at all times, intervention in said activity to be authorized by Dr. █████. SCP-XXXX-2 is to be opened every day at ████ AM, and closed again at ████ PM, unless unusual activity is noted.

Description: SCP-XXXX-2 is a five-foot hollow cube of unknown material, engraved on its faces baroque scenes of battles, journeys and quests pertaining to fictional, mythical and legendary figures. The engravings are set in a metal similar in most manners to bronze, but infinitely denser and seemingly indestructible. The rest of the cube body appears to be wood, but also denser, non-flammable, and also indestructible. However, when current events, averaged as one globally, take a turn toward war or anarchy, the bronze-like material shows signs of accelerated tarnish, rust and becomes worn and dull, and the wood-like material transitions into a weak and rotting appearance. When current events take a better turn, the bronze self-repairs, becoming polished, etched in incredible detail and with fine tolerance, and the wood restores itself to a smooth, semi-polished surface. It seems also to transition between different kinds of wood. Documented wood varieties so far include balsa, willow and pine at worst-case scenario, and oak, mahogany and an entirely white, ivory-like specimen at best case. At one point, shortly after [REDACTED], the box became ivory and its engravings became silver figures inlaid in gold backgrounds. Likewise, coming up to Dr. ██████'s death and following, the bronze became crudely hammered tin, or something resembling it, and the wood became something similar to bone, and left a scummy residue similar to coagulated blood on anything it touched.

The accepted 'top' of SCP-XXXX-2 bears at its center a sunlike shape, with the central body of the sun being a raised button. When depressed, the faces of the box unfold into a cubic net, leaving a metal framework and series of labyrinth and maze-like rooms, connected by doors and stairs, all on a miniature scale, but crafted to such a fine tolerance as to appear as real and life-sized when viewed through magnification. Outer walls do not appear to exist, and yet an unknown force prevents ingress and egress. Doors and stairs appear at random intervals, including a number of fixed doors and stairs seemingly leading to outside the framework of the cube. Whenever the cube is closed and opened, the internal layout has changed, and the materials used reflect the external appearance of the cube.

SCP-XXXX-2 is inhabited by several instances of SCP-XXXX-3, usually numbering ten to twenty, but sometimes as many as fifty or █████ depending on the current events. They appear to be monsters of mythical nature, such as dragons, manticores and chimaeras, proportionately sized to their environment. With threatening current events, SCP-XXXX-3 can take the forms of increasingly demonic creatures, including forms similar to those in HP Lovecraft's writings, or in some cases taking the form of SCP-████. Instances of SCP-XXXX-3 roam the labyrinth at random, most rotating a regular patrol of a specific area. Some, specimens of more intelligent creatures such as demons or goblins, actively seek out SCP-XXXX-1 and pursue it tirelessly.

SCP-XXXX-4 appears as a figure in a black robe with red trim, similarly proportioned to its environment. It slowly makes its way through the labyrinths, also seeking out SCP-XXXX-1. It appears to have command over all instances of SCP-XXXX-3, and forces similar to the traditional understanding of magic, often conjuring fire, ice and electric forces as offensive strategies against SCP-XXXX-1. It is cognizant of its location, speaks fluent English, Spanish, French, Russian, Greek, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese, but when speaking to SCP-XXXX-1 or SCP-XXXX-3, it uses an unknown ancient dialect similar to ancient Celtic. It's alternately hostile, but calm to any contact by SCP scientists and technicians, often making vague, passive-aggressive threats; or it becomes manipulative and flattering. It's unlikely that it can do any real harm on its own. It accepts its designation with some bemusement, but refers to itself as Asmodeus when allowed to. After conversing with it, researchers seem to have a difficult time maintaining their objectivity and tend to take for granted that what it says is true.

"The next person I catch addressing that little cultist freak with its preferred name is gonna end up on SCP-████ detail until their hair falls out. That little punk is SCP-XXXX-4, remember that!" Dr. █████, before [REDACTED].

SCP-XXXX-1 appears as a young man of ancient Celtic heritage, clad in medieval English armor, bearing a green cape, a broadsword, and a shield with a Celtic cross as its sole device. It refers to itself by a different name each time the cube is opened, almost always a name of a mythical or legendary hero, most typically Arthur. It tirelessly seeks out instances of SCP-XXXX-3 and fights with them, invariably ending in his victory, though occasionally taking considerable damage. It appears to be immortal, having an accelerated regenerative capacity, the ability to regrow limbs given time, and not displaying any signs of aging. It speaks any language it is addressed in, and greets those it interprets as 'kind Christian souls' with genteel and charm, while denouncing those it interprets as 'Pagan swine' with vehemence. These interpretations don't seem to have any basis in actual religious faith so much as the subject's morals and ethical code. In one instance, it attempted to break out of SCP-XXXX-2 and attack Dr. █████, but the invisible force-walls of the cube prevented him, and he swore vehemently to terminate Dr. █████. SCP-XXXX-1 explores SCP-XXXX-2 without sleeping, resting or eating, killing any instance of SCP-XXXX-3 it comes across, and often goading SCP-XXXX-4 into attacking, while searching it out. They never seem to be able to find each other, sometimes coming as close as four inches, but never sighting each other.

SCP-XXXX-1 claims its purpose in life is to 'cleanse the world of evil', 'bear Christendom's sword against the forces of evil,' and 'end Asmodeus forever'. When his motive is questioned, SCP-XXXX-1 flies into a righteous fury, strangely never personally offended, but outraged that his 'heavenly mission' has been questioned.

SCP-XXXX-1 and all instances of SCP-XXXX-3 appear to operate and react on normal, if miniaturized biological functions, bleeding, sweating and otherwise operating normally. The only exception is that they do not ingest anything and do not appear to excrete either. While it has not been tested, it has been theorized that SCP-XXXX-4 is of the same nature.

"If that spunky little hero ever catches up to Asmodeus, hell, you tell me. That's bound to be the end of SCP-XXXX, and maybe more than that." -Dr. █████.

Circumstances of Retrieval:

SCP-XXXX was found in rural England, in [REDACTED]. It was enshrined by the reverend ██████, and referred to as 'Camelot Redivivus' and he demanded it remain 'Or the forces of evil will overrun Earth.' He was sedated, a class-A amnesiac was administered and he was relocated as a shepherd in ██████, while [REDACTED] was substituted as the town's reverend.

Interrogation Log XXXX-3

An instance of SCP-XXXX-3, resembling a goblin, is addressed by Dr. █████.

Dr. █████ SCP-XXXX-3, can you hear me?

SCP-XXXX-3: Whuzzat? Who're you?

Dr. █████: I'm Dr. █████.

SCP-XXXX-3: Go away, you (expletive) (expletive). I'm lookin' for that (expletive) Arthur, the scum.

SCP-XXXX-3 refuses further communication. Interrogation ends.

Interrogation Log XXXX-4
SCP-XXXX-4 is addressed by Dr. █████.

SCP-XXXX-4: Greetings, Dr. █████.

Dr. █████: How did you know my name, SCP-XXXX-4?

SCP-XXXX-4: (bemused chuckle) I was listening earlier when you spoke with Arthur, the brat. I simply adore your….hm…objectivity.

Dr. █████: Specify.

SCP-XXXX-4: Your belief, your knowledge that nothing is good, nothing is evil, all is a means to an end. Morality is an illusion.

Dr. █████: That's…not quite true. I don't believe that; I believe in a moral code.

SCP-XXXX-4: Oh? That's not what SCP-166 told me.

Dr. █████: What?

SCP-XXXX-4: Do you really think she doesn't notice you staring at her? Do you really think she can't hear your thoughts? She and I have had many conversations. She resents your attention, and I've promised her I'll alter the situation.

Dr. █████: How do you intend to?

SCP-XXXX-4: You've thought for some years now that this box, a speck in Eternity's eye, is affected by the state of good and evil in the universe. How do you know? Size doesn't matter. It could conceivably be that it is we in 'Camelot Redivivus' as Reverend █████ called it affect the universe. I'll find a way. After all, I care for her. I have a heart.

Dr. █████: Have you communicated with any of the other SCPs?

SCP-XXXX-4: Yes, I've had some scintillating conversations with SCP-[REDACTED]162…

Dr. █████: It's not intelligent.

SCP-XXXX-4: Isn't it? I've also spoken with 169, 336she's a wonderful wit!and 548. Some others, as well. I've shared such blissful time with Tl'yroth.

Dr. █████: Who?

SCP-XXXX-4: I never found his designation, but his nickname, I believe, is 'Heart of Darkness.'

Dr. █████: You've spoken with him?

SCP-XXXX-4: Mmm. More of a spleen really. Now, about you, Dr. █████. The real reason I called you here…

Dr. █████: I'm the one who initiated contact?

SCP-XXXX-4: (Condescendingly) Yes, yes, of course…In any case, you can help me find this fool Arthur. Just tell me where he is. Talk to him again and occupy him. I'll find him. I'll kill him.

Dr. █████: What will happen if you do?

SCP-XXXX-4: (Laughter) My brethren and I can leave this accursed place.

Dr. █████: I can't help you. I'm under orders.

SCP-XXXX-4 breaks off into a rant in an unknown language, then regains its composure, laughs, and resumes his search for SCP-XXXX-1. Interrogation ends.

Interrogation Log XXXX-1:

Dr. █████ addressing SCP-XXXX-1 as it recovered from its wounds from a battle with an instance of SCP-XXXX 3. First established conversation with SCP-XXXX-1.

Dr. █████: Can you hear me, SCP-XXXX-1?

SCP-XXXX-1: Yea. Your accent is strange. And what is this name you call me by?

Dr. █████: SCP-XXXX-1 is your experimental designation. Is there a name you would rather I call you by?

SCP-XXXX-1: My name is Arthur. Pray tell, what is yours?

Dr. █████: My name is █████. How long have you been here?

SCP-XXXX-1: As long as I can remember, and verily much, much longer. Eternally I have battled with Asmodeus and his forces, and surely I shall continue the crusade until Time itself ends.

Dr. █████: Isn't it tiring?

SCP-XXXX-1: (laughs derisively) Only when I'm wounded. Tell me, █████—this doesn't appear to be the chapel. Where is the labyrinth now?

Dr. █████: I'm afraid I can't tell you exactly where, but you're in a foundation that analyzes anomalous artifacts.

For several moments, SCP-XXXX-1 stares at Dr. █████ with a pained expression on its face.

SCP-XXXX-1: Your words…say nothing.

Dr. █████: Allow me to rephrase. You're in a place where scholars such as I observe the activity of arcane and divine forces.

SCP-XXXX-1: What? Fascinating.

Dr. █████: Who is Asmodeus?

SCP-XXXX-1: A fiend in a black robe hiding somewhere in this vast labyrinth. A foul sorcerer, a servant of [REDACTED]. He must be destroyed. When he is, all evil everywhere will end. Evil in the world grows, and our eternal prison rots. Evil is pushed back and the walls shine with new life. You certainly have noticed the pattern!

Dr. █████: Yes, it puzzled us for a time, but we figured it out. Now, Arthur, can you be killed?

SCP-XXXX-1: Only Asmodeus can kill me, and he mustn't. If he does, the world shall fall into darkness.

An instance of SCP-XXXX-3 approaches, taking the form of a minotaur.

Dr. █████: Is this one of Asmodeus' forces?

SCP-XXXX-1: Leave me to my eternal quest for now, █████! At best, you're a distraction in battle!

Interrogation ends, the cube is closed.

"It's entirely possible Asmo…SCP-XXXX-4 says is true. We must take into consideration the idea that his tiny world may in fact reign over our own… -Dr. █████
